  • What is CBT?

    What is 'Cognitive Behavioural Therapy'?

    What's involved?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (or 'CBT', for short) is a practical form of talking therapy which helps people deal with their problems by changing some of the ways the person thinks and behaves. It doesn't delve deeply into your childhood and early experiences but instead focuses on the here and now, and on practical help for the future. CBT tends not to focus on any 'deep' causes of distress, but rather on the patterns of thoughts and behaviours which are maintaining that distress.

    Will it work for me?

Everyone is different. But the evidence suggests that CBT is usually one of the best approaches for anyone who wants an effective practical approach to current difficulties that focuses on the relief of symptoms and developing a 'toolkit' to prevent relapses in the future. CBT is effective in a whole range of areas including Depression, Anxiety, Anger Management and much more. It can also help with weight management, fear of flying, addictions and relationship problems.

How can I find out more?

There are many sites online which give you the flavour of CBT but one of the key things to remember is that with a therapist you will able to work together collaboratively to find the best solution for you. CBT is used extensively in the NHS and you can find out more on CBT from their website by clicking here

Do you offer therapy via skype?

Yes, in line with several professionally qualified practitioners we offer CBT for some issues over video-conferencing. However, we normally do not use Skype but prefer the more secure and robust system, Zoom. Please contact us via the section below if you would like to discuss this further

    Do you offer home visits?

In exceptional cases we are able to offer home visits in the Greater Manchester and Lancashire area. Please contact us below for further details.

    Do you offer weekend sessions?

In some cases we can offer weekend sessions. These are more expensive than our standard sessions due to clinician availability and room bookings.

    How much do you charge?

We charge £145 per session. Couples sessions are £170. All sessions are by Zoom and last 50 minutes.

    Tackling Unhelpful Thinking Styles

Break the vicious circles that fuel low mood and anxiety in the workplace

When a person experiences an unhelpful emotion (eg, depression or anxiety), it is often preceded by a number of unhelpful self-statements and thoughts. These frequently form an unconscious pattern and can become automatic, known as Unhelpful Thinking Styles (or UTSs). Our one-day programme will help all staff understand how perspectives that might have worked well for them in the past, have the potential to backfire.

  • Areas of Practice

We cover all major psychological difficulties. Here are some of the main areas we specialise in. Please note we currently do not treat anyone under 18 years of age.

    Anxiety

We offer support and a practical way forward through CBT for clients who are experiencing general anxiety and worry, PTSD, phobias, social anxiety and health anxiety.

    Depression

We help clients who are suffering from depression whether it feels like a reaction to a specific event or loss, or whether it seems to have no obvious trigger. By focusing on what is maintaining feelings of sadness, hopelessness or despair rather than what originally caused them we offer clients a practical evidenced-based route to relief.

    Anger Management

We all get angry from time to time, but we help clients who are experiencing enduring or intense periods of resentment, frustration and exasperation. Left unchecked anger can damage relationships, employment and reputation. We can provide practical help to manage anger and help reduce the perspectives that keep people on edge and unhappy.

    Practical Well being

Sometimes we look after our cars better than we look after ourselves. Certainly we all spend more time keeping physically fit than we do psychologically fit. The good news is that while keeping physically fit can be expensive and exhausting, keeping psychologically fit can be fun, soothing and revealing.

    Fear of Flying (Aerophobia)

Fear of flying affects around 6% of the population to such an extent that it makes flying very stressful or impossible. We can help you overcome your fears and allow you to travel in a much more relaxed way, and free to enjoy your holiday or business trip.

    Relationship stress and breakup

Relationships are a source of great happiness and contentment, but also of stress, depression and hurt. If you are going through a difficult period, or have recently come out of a relationship and feeling depressed and anxious, we can help.

    Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

PTSD as the name suggests occurs when an individual has had a traumatic experience in the past, but is still affected by it now often through nightmares and flashbacks. There may be other symptoms such as depression, insomnia, anger, irritability and guilt. CBT can help by supporting the sufferer to re-process the experience and relate to it differently.

    Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Everyone thinks "Did I lock the door?" or "Did I turn off the gas?" from time to time. Everyone has had the experience of being troubled by uninvited thoughts that are upsetting or invasive. And many sports stars have their special rituals before a match or race. For some people however obsessive thoughts or compulsive acts can become hugely debilitating. CBT can help by helping people face their concerns and tackle the thinking which maintains these upsetting experiences.
